dear dave,
i can not help thinking about where i would be, and the person i would be had i not been fortunate enough to meet you. you're energy and enthusiasm for music was beyond anything i have ever seen. but it wasn't simply enough to express to people how much you loved it, you wanted everyone else to love it as much as you did. that, i think, is your greatest gift... inspiring all of us, the many people you worked with over the years, to work harder, open up our minds, and most importantly, to be creative, and do just that... create. for us, that's what life is, creation and creativity. you not only convinced me to get protools, you took the time to teach me how to use it and to begin making music for myself, just like you did with so many others. it changed my life.
for almost everyone who knows you, music is the heartbeat of our lives. you taught so many of us so much about it. you never wanted to keep it a secret for yourself, you wanted us all to be as good at it and love making music as much as you. that's what i always thought was beautiful... how you would harass me about making beats, and call to see if i had been working on anything, and tell me how many times kenny and curly had been in the studio working. yeah, it was annoying at times, but i always respected why you did it, because you wanted me, everyone, the whole world, to love it the way you did.
all of us who knew you personally always knew what a brilliant person you were, and through your music, so many people who never got the chance have also been touched by your talent. for that, we are all better people. in fact, the world is a better place.
i'm saddened when i think about all the family and friends that you've left behind, but i think we should all smile and be thankful for the many things that you taught us... about music, and about life, which for you, like myself, are one and the same.
so, to honor you, it's really quite simple... we all just have to keep on doing what we love doing. we should think about how dedicated you were and how hard you always worked. even more than that, we should all take the time to share whatever knowledge and skill we have with anyone who wants to learn. if you had not taken the time to share your incredible talent with all off us, who knows where we would be?
in honor of you, my friend david shayman, disco d, we should not raise a glass and make a toast, we should not pour out a little liquor. i think the best way to honor you is simply to make some music... or just sit down and listen to a piece of music that moves us, that makes us feel something, and think about all the things that are important in life, and always remember to take time to enjoy them.
dave, thank you for being my friend. i will always cherish the many things you taught me and the music we made together.
